Music as the remedy for our times
The world has witnessed unprecedented shifts and challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020. Youth and adults all around the world have faced stress and uncertainty, partly due to the pandemic-related news disseminated by the media. In a time of continuous so-called “news” that unfortunately often generates unnecessary fear and confusion, music remains an unwavering source of comfort and strength for many. Hooray!
Music as a Therapeutic Refuge
While media coverage can sometimes fan the flames of fear, music serves as a safe haven for our emotions. Listening to music can provide an oasis of calm in the midst of information overload. It helps us express ourselves, process emotions, and find a moment of serenity in the chaos of the world around us.
Music therapy is a recognized approach to alleviating the effects of stress and anxiety. Using music as a therapeutic tool helps people, both young and old, reduce emotional pressure and promote a sense of well-being.
Here at Klankspel, we pay a lot of attention to forms of music and therapy. Making music yourself is a scientifically proven healthy activity for body and mind. The immune system greatly benefits from it. Keep an eye on this site and check out the lesson plans I’m creating, for both young and old.
Music as Emotional Support
In times of crisis, music is often the friend who never judges, always available, and understands us without words. Depression can bring a sense of loneliness and hopelessness, but music has the power to soothe these emotions and create a sense of connection. Sharing favorite songs and discussing their meaning with friends and family can be a powerful tool for communication and finding support.
Many artists have also written and released music that reflects the feelings of isolation and anxiety that many have experienced during the pandemic. This music serves as a recognizable and comforting sound of empathy and understanding, reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles.
Not only during a ‘pandemic’: listening to and making music is timeless and a true source of inspiration and strength. Life would look very different without music. Given what occupies the average person these days (work, stress, rushing, rushing…), this is a good thing!
Making Music: A Creative Outlet
Not only listening to music but also actively making music can serve as a powerful tool to support our mental health. Playing an instrument, singing, or composing can be an outlet for stress and tension and can provide a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
With electronic music, in particular, where both the creator and the listener embark on a journey of endless sound manipulation, it’s an incredibly beautiful way to ensure focus, calm, and motivation: without the attention being stuck on ‘unpleasant’ things, without media, newspapers, or things that don’t matter for the present moment. The only thing that matters now is your music experience. More people should discover that, don’t you think?
Regardless of the origin of stress or anxiety, music remains the remedy for our times. It helps us relax, heal, and find a sense of community amidst uncertainty, hurry, and/or gloom. In this unpredictable world, music is our reliable ally, a light in the darkness that guides us on our journey to well-being.
