Small intro
Given the title of this post… it can work excellently! Just making music by doing it! Maybe overcoming a few hurdles. But don’t be blown away by the apparent tangle of cables and chaos. Not at all. Eurorack has a lot to offer because it’s super-compatible! Or at least, this is pursued as much as possible by the many manufacturers. The practice can indeed be a bit of trial and error at times: also the charm of this hobby 😊
Eurorack complex? No. That’s an illusion.
Making music with a Eurorack system may initially appear complex due to the many possibilities and components, but you can start simply and gradually learn more. Here are steps to get started in an accessible way:
Basic Setup: Begin by choosing a few essential modules that you need to generate and manipulate sounds. This typically includes an OSC – oscillator (for generating sound waves), a VCF – filter (to shape the sound), a VCA – amplifier (to control the volume), and an ENV – envelope generator (to control how sounds change over time).
Power Supply: Ensure you have a stable power source for your Eurorack system because modules require electrical power to function. Good ready-made racks come with a quality power supply. Don’t skimp on quality.
Patch Cables: Use (good quality) patch cables to connect the modules to each other. This allows you to send signals from one module to another. Start simply by connecting an oscillator to a filter and then to an amplifier, and so on.
Tweaking Sounds: Experiment with the knobs and settings on your modules to create sounds. Change the frequency of the oscillator, adjust the filter to shape the sound, and use the envelope generator to modify how the sound starts and ends.
Sequencing: If you want more control over timing and melodies, add a sequencer module. This allows you to create and repeat patterns, enabling you to compose.
Adding Effects: Expand your system with effect modules like reverb, delay, or distortion to enrich your sounds with that “special sauce.”
Listen and Learn
It’s important to listen to your sounds as you make adjustments and experiment. Learn how each module works and how they interact with each other.
Inspiration: Get inspired by other Eurorack musicians and tutorials online. There are many videos and resources that can help you learn new techniques and improve your skills. YouTube is your friend!
Patience and Creativity: It may take some time to become comfortable with working with a Eurorack system, so be patient. It’s a platform that offers a lot of room for creativity, so experiment and discover your own sound. Above all, don’t give up.
Grow with Your System: As you gain more experience (or have it), you can consider expanding your Eurorack system with new modules to increase your capabilities. However, do keep an eye on your bank account.
In Klankspel’s videos, you’ll see various modules being used. All stages of exploration are covered. Check the lesson plans for real step-by-step advice and findings.
